Laurie DeRose, Ph.D. in Sociology, is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at The Catholic University of America. She blogs for the Institute for Family Studies where she is a Senior Fellow. She also serves as the Director of Research for the World Family Map project that investigates both the determinants of family strength and the outcomes stemming from family strength across the globe. Her research on social stress and birthweight in the Global South indicates that both gender inequality and single motherhood “get under the skin” and contribute to poorer health.
