By MA Student Sarah Thomas
The M.A. students met with Tom Shakely, an alumnus of the MA in Human Rights who is now Chief Engagement Officer at Americans United for Life. Tom gave an overview of AUL’s history and vision. Founded in 1971, AUL’s membership was initially varied including divinity scholars, lawyers, and bioethicists. Their key contribution is to life-affirming law and policy at federal and state levels. Tom discussed AUL’s paper, “Make Birth Free.” He answered questions about the root causes driving bioethical reflection and action, AUL’s funding, and how to start a nonprofit. This was an enlightening and engaging meeting that made me think more about bioethics in America.
