Announcing the Addition of Cardinal Gibbons’ name to the Institute for Human Ecology

As our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, a moment for profound national reflection and renewal, The Catholic University of America is delighted to announce that its distinguished Institute for Human Ecology will henceforth bear the name The James Cardinal Gibbons Institute for Human Ecology.

The addition honors James Cardinal Gibbons, the visionary founder and first Chancellor of our University, whose steadfast leadership helped bring to life the bold dream of America’s bishops: a national university dedicated to the harmonious pursuit of faith and reason, truth and human flourishing.

At the dawn of our institution’s history, Cardinal Gibbons embodied the courageous spirit of a young Church in a young nation. The first American-born cardinal, elevated in 1886, Gibbons was a tireless advocate for the integration of Catholic truth with the ideals of the American republic. Through his bestselling apologetic work, The Faith of Our Fathers (1876), he accessibly explained Catholic doctrine, fostering greater understanding in a predominantly Protestant society. He defended Catholic teaching on marriage, promoted the integration of Catholic immigrants into American culture, and championed the rights of workers, affirming the Church’s commitment to the dignity of labor during America’s industrial age. His legacy reminds us that authentic human ecology has always been at the heart of our mission.

By invoking Cardinal Gibbons’ name, we intend to renew and deepen our commitment to the founding era of The Catholic University of America: an era marked by audacious hope, intellectual rigor, patriotic fidelity, and a profound trust in the Church’s role in illuminating the path to genuine human progress. In an age of fragmentation and ideological division, The James Cardinal Gibbons Institute for Human Ecology will continue to draw upon the Catholic intellectual tradition to advance multidisciplinary scholarship, educate new generations of leaders, and foster dialogue on the economic, cultural, and social conditions essential for human thriving.

Gibbons wrote in 1900: “Let the watchword of the Catholic University [of America] be: Revelation and science; religion and patriotism, God and our country.” We invite our entire University community—faculty, students, alumni, benefactors, and friends—to join us in this joyful celebration of our heritage and our future. May Cardinal Gibbons’ intercession guide the Institute as it carries forward his legacy of faith-filled inquiry and service to the Church and the world.
