In a remarkable session aimed at broadening their understanding of human rights issues, students pursuing a Master’s degree in Human Rights at The Catholic University of America had the opportunity last Wednesday to meet with Prof. Lucia Ann Silecchia, an expert in the field and a representative of the Holy See at the United Nations (UN).
William Sanders, the Director of the MA in Human Rights program, introduced Professor Silecchia and underscored the significance of such interactions in giving students real-world exposure to human rights challenges.
Professor Silecchia, renowned for her expertise in a range of human rights areas, including environmental law and elderly rights, shared her wealth of knowledge with the eager students. Notably, she serves on the Holy See’s delegation of experts at the UN, a role that carries significant responsibility.
During the session, Professor Silecchia touched upon several crucial topics: Intersection of Environmental Law and Human Rights: Professor Silecchia discussed how environmental law intersects with human rights, shedding light on ongoing discussions at the UN regarding the necessity of establishing rights frameworks for elderly individuals.
The Unique Role of the Holy See at the UN: She clarified the unique position of the Holy See, which, despite not being a sovereign state, actively participates as an observant member at the UN. This status allows the Holy See to address global moral issues comprehensively.
The students actively engaged in the discussion, posing thought-provoking questions on diverse human rights issues. They inquired about environmental concerns, elderly rights, euthanasia, and Professor Silecchia’s experiences representing the Holy See at the UN. Professor Silecchia responded to their queries with passion and wisdom, offering valuable insights into these complex matters.
The session concluded with expressions of gratitude from the students and Dr. William Sanders, who commended Professor Silecchia for her invaluable contributions. In return, Professor Silecchia encouraged the students to leverage the abundant resources available at The Catholic University of America, particularly within the Columbus School of Law.
This encounter not only deepened the students’ understanding of human rights but also highlighted the importance of international collaboration and advocacy in addressing pressing human rights challenges. Professor Silecchia’s multifaceted expertise and dedication to these issues left an indelible mark on all those present, further motivating them in their pursuit of a more just and equitable world.
